Center for Health Care Services
Bexar County
This 150,000-SF facility provides healthcare services for the near west side of San Antonio. The structural system is made from composite structural steel for the superstructure and suspended floor framing supported on drilled piers. The project also included renovation of a three-story, 27,000-SF historic building. The floor and roof framing for this structure consisted of wood members. After review of the existing members, R-S-C-R determined demolition of all wood members was required. Floor framing for the second, third floor and roof was replaced with light gage steel and wide flange shapes. Existing cast-iron and wood columns were replaced with structural steel tube columns. The entire structural system was replaced while preserving the historic brick wall.
The Owner had a desire to have as few columns as possible, so before demolition began, R-S-C-R directed the testing laboratory on several items, which resulted in completing the design of the new structure utilizing the existing walls as load bearing.
