Wharton Dual Language Academy

Houston ISD

R-S-C-R provided the structural design and detailed structural drawings for this addition and renovation to the Wharton Elementary School, originally built in 1929. Wharton Dual Language Academy is the first school within Houston ISD to offer a comprehensive bilingual learning program. The existing building was renovated and a new three-story addition was constructed adjacent to the original building. The three-story addition houses classrooms, as well as a library, cafeteria and a second floor gymnasium.

The first floor is soil supported, while the super structure consists of composite steel supporting metal deck. A three-inch acoustical metal deck was utilized in the gymnasium, allowing for a more efficient roof framing system.
